Buy milk or other perishable item for sale from a vendor, yearly periodic inv. how do you account for the milk

I am trying to figure out whether they would go to inventory or goods available for sale or what?. I don't think they would go under inventory since inventory is counted once a year (unless) its reconciled like monthly or something.Buy milk or other perishable item for sale from a vendor, yearly periodic inv. how do you account for the milk
As a former dairy industry worker. Milk is counted at the dairy manufacturing plant daily. With that inventory taken, the next day's production plan is developed to make sure that enough products are available to meet customer demand. Raw milk that was bought from farms was recorded at each farm to determine accounts payable to each farmer. Until the raw milk was processed, it would be not be available for sale. Depending on your chart of accounts, it probably should be listed in an inventory item for raw materials.
