How do you check if a item for sale is stolen?

If you are dealing in used items, is there a web site NCIC or something where you can run serial numbers for stolen item to check before you purchase?How do you check if a item for sale is stolen?

Don't know of any such site open to general public, only to police officers. You could go to the police, say you want to see if it is stolen, and then have them run a check.
